Check the budget at a glance #

When a project has a budget, the Project Overview gives you a quick view of where it stands.

The budget KPI shows the most important budget information without having to open a report.

Depending on the project, it can show:

  • how much budget remains or how far the project is over budget;
  • how much has been used out of the budget;
  • a progress bar;
  • the budget period being reviewed.

Hours budgets are shown in hours. Cost, Billing, and Expense budgets are shown as money.

For a Lifetime budget, the KPI uses the full project budget history.

For a Monthly, Quarterly, or Yearly budget, it shows the current budget period.

This makes the KPI useful for a quick check before you dig into the charts or reports.

Budget-aware Progress chart #

The Progress chart changes to match the project’s budget.

Lifetime budgets #

For a Lifetime budget, the chart shows budget use over time against the budget amount.

This makes it easier to see whether the project is moving toward the budget gradually or using it faster than expected.

Use the chart navigation to move through the timeline or return to the current period.

Monthly, Quarterly, and Yearly budgets #

For budgets that reset, the Progress chart compares the budget periods.

For example, a Monthly budget can show how much was used in each month, while a Quarterly budget can show the same information by quarter.

The current budget period is highlighted so it is easy to find.

Use the chart navigation to look at earlier or later periods and return to the current period.

Hours and money #

The chart uses the same type of value as the budget.

  • Hours budgets use hours.
  • Cost budgets use labor cost.
  • Billing budgets use billable amounts.
  • Expense budgets use expense amounts.

When a project-level Billing budget is set to include billable expenses, those qualifying expenses are included in the budget progress too.

Task budgets #

When a project uses task budgets, the overview can show the budget, amount used, and remaining amount for the budgeted tasks.

Tasks without a budget are not treated as having a zero budget.

An entered zero is a real configured budget and will still appear as a budgeted task.

If the overview provides Show all project activity, use it when you want extra project activity for context in addition to the activity tied to the budgeted tasks.

Use Budget Performance for a wider view #

The Project Overview is best for checking one project quickly.

Use Budget Performance under Explore when you want to compare several projects, review past budget periods, compare Monthly, Quarterly, or Yearly budgets, filter by budget status or budget progress, or review task budgets across projects.
